The award-winning Broadway musical ‘Dear Evan Hansen‘ will be staged in Flanders for the first time this autumn, with a limited five-week run at the Fakkeltheater in Antwerp. The production will play in the intimate Rode Zaal from 4 September to 4 October 2026.
The international hit musical tells the story of Evan, a socially anxious teenager who becomes entangled in a lie that quickly spirals beyond his control. What begins as an attempt to belong develops into a powerful exploration of loneliness, connection and self-discovery in a world shaped by social media. Featuring well-known songs such as ‘Waving Through a Window‘, the show has resonated with audiences worldwide for its emotional depth and contemporary themes, including mental health and isolation.
The musical, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, has won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicals of the 21st century.
The Antwerp-based company InTeam Productions, previously known for bringing titles such as ‘Kinky Boots‘, ‘Spring Awakening‘ and ‘Lillies‘ to Belgium, is behind the new production. Securing international titles remains a challenge in Flanders’ relatively small musical market, but the company sees this premiere as further recognition of its work by international rights holders.
This staging will be a non-replica production, meaning it will differ in design and presentation from the original Broadway and West End versions. The creative team aims to develop its own interpretation, in line with the company’s tradition of tackling socially relevant themes and showcasing emerging musical talent alongside more experienced performers.
Auditions are currently underway, with casting and additional creative team members to be announced at a later date. The production is directed by Niels de Valk and Brecht Callewaert, with Charles Vanden Broucke as musical director and Matthew Michel responsible for choreography and staging.
