ANTWERP | Construction begins on new Steenplein pontoon to meet rising water transport demand

Work has started on a new 150-metre pontoon at Steenplein in Antwerp, replacing the existing structure to better serve the increasing number of passengers using water transport along the Scheldt. The project, a joint initiative by the City of Antwerp and De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, aims to improve comfort and accessibility for travellers relying on the St Anne Ferry (Sint-Annaveer) and De Waterbus services.

The current pontoon, in use since 2017, functions as a mooring point for public water transport and occasional leisure boats. However, growing passenger numbers have made a larger, more modern facility necessary.

Enhanced features for passengers and boats

The new pontoon will include a spacious transition platform, a wide access bridge, and a canopy with soft yellow accents to provide shelter in poor weather. At 150 metres long – 50 metres longer than the current pontoon – it will accommodate four boats at once, compared to the current capacity of three.

Flemish Minister for Mobility, Public Works, Ports, and Sport, Annick De Ridder (N-VA), underscored the project’s importance: “More and more people are opting for water-based travel. This development supports that trend and ensures Steenplein remains an accessible and pleasant transfer hub for the future.”

Off-site construction and phased installation

Designed by SBE and constructed by a consortium of Herbosch-Kiere and Iemants, the new pontoon will be built off-site in contractors’ workshops. Once completed, it will be transported by water to Antwerp and installed. Construction of the new pontoon is scheduled to begin in November 2026, with completion expected in spring 2027.

Temporary expansion to maintain service

To maintain capacity during construction and the ongoing premetro tunnel works, a temporary expansion of the existing pontoon will be implemented. This expansion, which includes an additional bridge, is set to be finished by early May 2026. AG Vespa, the municipal agency responsible for urban projects, is coordinating the effort alongside De Vlaamse Waterweg nv.

Alderman for Mobility Koen Kennis (N-VA) highlighted the project’s significance for Antwerp: “As a city built on water, Antwerp deserves a fully functional mobility hub. This new pontoon is the final step in realising that vision.”

Minimising disruption during the transition

The construction process will be carried out in phases, including dredging, pile driving, and adjustments to the quayside infrastructure. The existing pontoon will be temporarily relocated northward, adjacent to the cruise terminal, to minimise disruption to ferry and waterbus services during the transition.

This collaborative project reflects a commitment to modernising Antwerp’s waterborne transport infrastructure, ensuring it meets the needs of a growing number of commuters and visitors.
