Antwerp prepares citywide fan zones for 2026 FIFA World Cup

The City of Antwerp is preparing a citywide framework to allow residents to watch and celebrate the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place from 11 June to 19 July 2026. The plan allows each district to organise or support a local fan zone with a large outdoor screen, while indoor venues and hospitality businesses will also be able to screen matches under specific conditions.

The City aims to ensure that as many residents as possible can experience the atmosphere of the tournament together. In response to the many ideas and initiatives emerging ahead of the World Cup, Antwerp has established guidelines intended to create a safe and accessible football experience for people of all ages.

Mayor Els van Doesburg (N-VA) said the initiative is designed to bring the excitement of the tournament to neighbourhoods across the city.

“The World Cup is approaching and Antwerp can already feel the excitement. We are bringing the tournament into every neighbourhood so the whole city can share the experience — in every street, every district and every supporter’s heart.”

Under the framework, up to ten large outdoor screens can be installed across Antwerp. District authorities can work with partners to organise local fan villages centred around these screens, provided the events meet requirements for professional organisation, safety and accessibility. Districts have until 15 March 2026 to indicate where they intend to organise or support such initiatives.

Large screens may also be installed at indoor venues during the tournament, provided organisers comply with the relevant regulations and obtain the necessary permits.

Hospitality businesses will also be allowed to place a proportionate television screen on their licensed terraces so customers can follow the matches. To minimise disturbance to nearby residents, only matches starting no later than 22:00 may be shown outdoors. Operators must notify the city in advance.

Through this range of initiatives across the city, Antwerp aims to ensure a high-quality and safe shared viewing experience for residents during the 2026 World Cup.
