Dutch passenger advocate Rover calls for EuroCity to go from Antwerp to Eindhoven instead of Rotterdam

In the Netherlands, passenger association Rover has responded positively to the proposed 2027 timetable by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), but is urging several improvements, including the introduction of a direct international intercity service between Eindhoven in North Brabant and Antwerp in Belgium.

Together with other consumer organisations in the Locov, Rover reviewed NS’s draft plans. While welcoming measures such as additional peak-hour trains around Utrecht and the return of ten-minute services on Fridays, the group says further enhancements are needed.

Direct Eindhoven to Antwerp link

Rover’s main proposal is to extend the existing EuroCity service from Brussels and Antwerp-Central Railway Station beyond Breda to Eindhoven, instead of routing it towards Rotterdam. Due to the introduction of new rolling stock (a new locomotive) in 2027, the current timetable between Breda and Rotterdam is expected to become less efficient, increasing journey times.

According to Rover, a connection to Eindhoven would offer a more attractive alternative. Policy officer Frank Visser said the change would finally provide Eindhoven with a long-awaited direct link to the Belgian rail network. Travellers from Rotterdam Central would still have access to the faster EuroCity Direct service or could transfer in Breda.

Additional stops and regional access

Rover is also calling for intercity services between Amsterdam and Enkhuizen to include a standard stop at Zaandam, and where possible Purmerend. This is linked to planned works on the IJtunnel in 2027, which will disrupt bus services to Amsterdam Central Station.

Haarlem to Leiden services

NS plans to replace weekend Sprinter services between Haarlem and Leiden with intercity trains making additional stops at Hillegom and Voorhout. Rover supports the proposal and suggests extending it to weekday evenings, which would increase service frequency without adding extra train kilometres.

Early and late services

The organisation also highlights the importance of early and late connections. It warns that a proposed early Sunday train from Zwolle to The Hague Central should not replace the existing service from Amersfoort. Rover also recommends extending a planned weekend night train from Deventer – Zutphen to Almelo, improving coverage and avoiding overlap with a competing service operated by Keolis.

NS is expected to review the recommendations in the coming weeks, with a final timetable proposal to be submitted to infrastructure manager ProRail before the summer. The new timetable is due to come into effect in December 2026.
