Antwerp’s Stadspark or City Park will welcome a captivating new addition to its cultural landscape this week as French interdisciplinary artist Kévin Bray unveils ‘The One That Tails‘, a striking sculpture set to transform the park into an immersive evening experience.
The piece, commissioned by Kunst in de Stad or Art in the City for the 12th edition of Antwerp Art Weekend, will be displayed on De Sokkel (The Pedestal), the city’s dedicated platform for contemporary public art, from 14 to 17 May.
Each evening, as the sun sets, the sculpture will come alive between 21.00 and 22.00 through a mesmerising combination of projections and sound. This nightly activation will reveal a multi-layered narrative, gradually unfolding the thought-provoking questions the work poses about presence, the role of technology in our lives, and the ever-evolving nature of human perception.
Bray’s sculpture, crafted using advanced 3D-printing techniques, embodies his exploration of the fluid relationship between digital and physical realms. The seated figure serves as a tangible representation of characters that originate in virtual spaces, carrying with them the traces of both worlds.
Lien Van de Kelder (Vooruit), Alderman for Culture, shared her excitement about the project: “A sculpture that lives?! With ‘The One That Tails’, we are bringing art to the very heart of Antwerp, creating a space in Stadspark where people can gather, reflect, and engage with their surroundings in a new way. This collaboration between Kunst in de Stad and Antwerp Art Weekend is a testament to the city’s vibrant cultural scene. During the weekend, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to explore the many galleries, museums, art centres, and unique locations that make Antwerp a hub for contemporary art. I invite everyone, families, friends, and art lovers, to take a stroll through the city during this wonderful long Ascension weekend and experience the magic for themselves.”
Kévin Bray, whose practice is deeply rooted in the intersection of digital and material production, is based in Amsterdam but has gained international recognition for his innovative approach to art. His work often involves video, graphic design, and sound, which he skillfully combines to create hybrid forms that transcend traditional boundaries. ‘The One That Tails’ is a prime example of this approach, offering viewers a chance to engage with the complex ways in which digital and physical realities intersect and influence one another. The sculpture challenges us to consider how the digital age has reshaped our understanding of the world, blurring the lines between what is virtual and what is real.
