BELGIUM | 2-euro coin for 100 years of NMBS / SNCB

To mark the 100th anniversary of NMBS / SNCB, the Federal Public Service Finance, through the Royal Mint of Belgium, has issued a special Belgian €2 commemorative coin. At the railway museum Train World in Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek in Brussels, Mint Master Giovanni Van de Velde officially presented the first copies to Jean-Luc Crucke (Les Engagés), Federal Minister for Mobility, Climate and Ecological Transition, responsible for Sustainable Development, and to Sophie Dutordoir, CEO of NMBS / SNCB.

With this commemorative coin, the Federal Public Service Finance pays tribute to a century of railway history that has helped shape Belgium. Since its establishment in 1926, NMBS / SNCB has been an indispensable link in the country’s economic and social life and a driving force behind accessible and sustainable mobility.

A jubilee that connects

In 2026, NMBS / SNCB is celebrating its centenary with numerous public activities throughout the year. Music, culture, and exceptional open days at two NMBS / SNCB workshops will invite the general public to discover the railways up close. The commemorative coin fits seamlessly into these celebrations as a tangible symbol of connection, movement, and progress.

Through this commemorative coin, the General Administration of the Treasury within the Federal Public Service Finance demonstrates how it contributes, through its public responsibilities, to preserving and promoting important moments in our national history. By carefully designing and issuing official coins, the Royal Mint of Belgium helps safeguard the country’s collective memory and highlights major milestones in society.

Jean-Luc Crucke said: “For 100 years, NMBS / SNCB has brought people together and connected our regions. This commemorative coin is a fitting recognition of that rich history, while also looking ahead to the future: an even stronger, safer, and more sustainable railway network for everyone.”

A coin with a story

The Belgian €2 coin is entirely dedicated to 100 years of NMBS / SNCB. At the top appears the iconic NMBS / SNCB logo from 1935, designed by Jean De Roy, flanked by the years 1926 and 2026. At the centre is the centenary logo: the number 100, shaped as railway tracks, with the zeros forming the symbol of infinity. Emerging from the logo are a locomotive from 1926 and a train from 2026 – a powerful visual representation of a century of railways and a glimpse into the future.

Beneath the design appear the country code BE, the Mint Master’s mark (an Erlenmeyer flask with an asterisk), and the mint mark of the Royal Dutch Mint (the Staff of Mercury). The entire design is framed by pearls.

Sophie Dutordoir: “Being depicted on a two-euro coin is a powerful symbol of a public company that has been part of daily life in Belgium for a hundred years. This commemorative coin immortalises a century of railway history in something tangible and rich in meaning. It is also a recognition of the employees of NMBS / SNCB, who every day deliver public service with enthusiasm and professionalism.”
