Since 2014, Brussels Airlines has reduced noise pollution from its fleet by half, Belga reports. The introduction of Airbus A320neo aircraft significantly contributed to this achievement. The Belgian airline celebrated on Thursday 2 July the recent arrival of its eighth aircraft. Noise pollution from departing and landing aircraft is a high priority in Brussels.
The A320neo is 50% quieter than its predecessor, the A320ceo. In November 2023, Brussels Airlines began renewing its medium-haul fleet with its first A320neo, followed by six more. A total of thirteen aircraft are planned. Once completed, the entire fleet will consist of 46 aircraft of various types.
The A320neo consumes up to 20% less fuel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions, and is much quieter than the previous model. Brussels Airlines has thus been able to reduce aircraft noise pollution by 50% compared to 2014, said CEO Dorothea von Boxberg during an event attended by, among others, Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele (N-VA), Flemish Minister of Environment Jo Brouns (CD&V), and Brussels Airport CEO Arnaud Feist.
They mainly discussed the so-called ‘balanced approach’ procedure initiated by the federal and Flemish governments in preparation for a new environmental permit for Brussels Airport.
In March 2024, the Flemish Government granted a new environmental permit to Brussels Airport. However, this permit was annulled in July 2025 by the Council for Permit Disputes. Flanders has been given until 30 June 2029, to issue a new permit, which can only be done after completing the European Balanced Approach procedure.
Brussels Airlines assured that it intends to collaborate with various stakeholders to reach a balanced agreement regarding noise nuisance caused by the airport. Brussels Airport reiterated its commitment to “growth with less disturbance.”
