Frecciarossa to link Rome and Milan to Munich from summer 2027

High-speed Frecciarossa trains will link Munich in Bavaria directly with Milan in Lombardy and Rome in Latium (Lazio) from summer 2027, under a new cooperation between Deutsche Bahn (DB), Trenitalia and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

The new services will provide direct connections between Germany, Austria, and Italy, with trains calling at a number of major destinations in the Alps and northern Italy, including Innsbruck in Tyrol, Bolzano (Bozen) in South Tyrol, Trento in Trentino-Alto Adige, Verona in Veneto, and Bologna in Emilia-Romagna. Two return services per day are planned for both the Munich–Milan and Munich–Rome routes.

The three railway companies presented the cooperation at the InnoTrans rail trade fair in Berlin on Wednesday, where a Frecciarossa train was also on display.

“Italy and Austria are particularly popular holiday destinations, and we want to make travelling there by train from Germany even more comfortable,” said Dr Michael Peterson, DB’s board member for long-distance passenger transport. “International long-distance rail is a team sport. Together with our partner railways, we already offer more than 300 international connections. Our new route from Munich to Milan and Rome will give this an additional boost.”

Trenitalia’s general manager Simone Gorini said the company was pleased to bring the Frecciarossa to Germany.

“It is a great pleasure for us to bring the Frecciarossa to Germany and, together with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, enter a new phase of our international expansion,” he said. “After the Frecciarossa has already been appreciated and used by millions of passengers in France, and Spain, it will soon also be available to German and Austrian travellers, giving them the opportunity to discover and experience a new way of travelling that combines comfort, quality and speed.”

ÖBB passenger transport board member Dr Sabine Stock said the service would bring tourist regions in the three countries closer together.

“The Frecciarossa will bring attractive tourism regions in Germany, Austria and Italy even closer together and make cross-border travel easier and more comfortable,” she said. “This new service shows what is possible when railway companies join forces.”
