Flemish LGBTQIA+ umbrella organisation çavaria will host the second edition of ‘More Than Queer‘ on 5 December 2026, an interactive training day exploring how different forms of inequality intersect and how the LGBTQIA+ movement can become more inclusive.
The event will bring together volunteers and activists to examine how structural inequalities overlap and reinforce one another in the everyday lives of LGBTQIA+ people. It will also encourage participants to reflect on how their own identities and social positions shape their perspectives, and how they can use these positions to bring about positive change.
The training day takes its starting point from the activist principle that nobody is free until everyone is free. More than five decades after the phrase became prominent in activist discussions, çavaria argues that divisions within the LGBTQIA+ community remain a challenge to collective action.
‘More Than Queer’ will provide a platform for people with experience of different intersections of inequality. Participants will discuss how to bridge tensions within the community and focus their efforts on the shared struggle for a more just society.
The interactive programme will go beyond discussion, offering practical tools and approaches that participants can use in their activism and volunteer work. It is open to anyone interested in learning about and contributing to a more inclusive movement, whether or not they are already familiar with concepts such as intersectionality.
The detailed programme will be announced at a later date.
The free event takes place on Saturday 5 December from 10:00 to 13:30 at K22, Kammerstraat 22 in Ghent. It is aimed at çavaria volunteers and other volunteers and activists involved in queer communities and LGBTQIA+ initiatives. The training day will go ahead if at least 15 people register. Registration details will be announced later.
The organisers describe the event as a safe(r) space. Participants can approach any member of staff for questions or support, and çavaria’s policy on unwanted behaviour will apply throughout the event.
