“We’ve been doing this for 13 years”, Antwerp Queer Arts Festival says. Since 2013, AQAF organises a queer, more edgy, more ‘alternative’, less polished, less gentrified (?) festival for LGBTQIA+ people in the summer. It runs alongside Antwerp Pride.
The Antwerp Queer Arts Festival (AQAF) will host a public rally ahead of this year’s Antwerp Pride, calling for concrete action to improve the safety, rights and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people in the city.
The event takes place on Tuesday 4 August at 20:00 on Suikerrui and will feature speeches, live performances and music. The rally coincides with the Antwerp Pride opening reception at Antwerp City Hall. Probably this is not a coincidence.
Focus on concrete demands
Organisers say Pride is more than an annual parade, describing it as a year-round commitment to making Antwerp a safer, fairer and more inclusive city.
The rally will highlight several priorities, including the need for safe shelter for LGBTQIA+ young people, an end to discrimination in the housing market, greater inclusion of transgender people, and safer public spaces for LGBTQIA+ communities.
Organisers are also calling for an end to what they describe as the instrumentalisation of the LGBTQ+ community and are demanding that the Antwerp Pride Parade take place without the participation of extremist groups.
Speeches, performances and music
The evening programme will combine speeches with musical and artistic performances, while organisers are encouraging members of the public to attend and show their support for the campaign’s demands.
The rally takes place on Tuesday 4 August at 20:00 on Suikerrui in central Antwerp. Attendance is free.
