ANTWERP PRIDE 2027 | What to expect of the 20th anniversary?

2026 marks the nineteenth (19th) edition of Antwerp Pride. From Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 August, Antwerp in Belgium will once again be taken over by rainbow vibes. Prides are a mix of celebration – parties – and activism and advocacy. For the 2026 edition, the organising committee focuses on fearing less and being fearless.

I know, Antwerp Pride 2026 hasn’t even finished yet. There’s still an entire Sunday to go, and the organising committee hasn’t sent out its closing press release. Yet I can already tell you that Antwerp Pride 2026 will have been a great success. Unless I’m completely wrong and this paragraph ages very badly. For the record: I’m writing this on Friday.

Antwerp Pride has grown into a major event with many recurring activities. You could even call them traditions. I often say that each edition of Antwerp Pride is about 90% the same.

That could change in 2027. I’m confident the organising committee will go the extra mile. Perhaps Pride will be extended with more days, or the parade will become even longer. Not everyone will welcome that.

Critics often describe Antwerp Pride as too commercial and too corporate. They’re right: Antwerp Pride is corporate. It has become gentrified. But I have bad news for those critics: that’s simply how it works.

Subsidies are increasingly difficult to obtain. Belgium has little tradition of private donations on the scale seen in countries like the United States. At the same time, legislation on health and safety, accounting and administration requires professional organisation, while visitors expect a high-quality event. Under those circumstances, there is little alternative but to seek corporate sponsors.

Barring bad weather or other unforeseen calamities, Antwerp Pride 2027 is likely to be even bigger. Unlike the now-defunct The Belgian Pride organisation, Antwerp Pride vzw has become a stable, well-run organisation that knows how to deliver a large-scale event.

In contrast, the Belgian Pride has become the Brussels Pride and is organised by the tourist board.

One event I’m particularly looking forward to is ‘Between Us. Exploring Queer Spaces‘ at the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS). I’m curious to see the curatorial choices behind the exhibition.

I’ve written before about what I see as a growing tendency in contemporary queer narratives to gloss over the 2000s and 2010s. Too often, the story jumps from the activism of the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s straight to today’s debates about pinkwashing, rainbow capitalism and transphobia, leaving out the intervening decades.

Yet those years matter. They explain how we got from marginalisation to the level of visibility and institutional and corporate acceptance we see today. The LGBTQIA+ community has never existed in a vacuum; its history has always been intertwined with broader social, political and economic developments. Ignoring those decades risks telling an incomplete story.

Anyway…

Later today – or perhaps not until Monday – we’ll know the dates for Antwerp Pride 2027. My guess is 4 to 8 August. Then again, because 31 July falls on a Saturday next year, the organisers might decide to move the event back by a week. That, however, could create clashes with other events.

Whatever the dates turn out to be, I hope I’ll actually have the weekend off next year. Unlike this year.
